Nothing Fancy, Just Love Series: Creating A Vision For Your Wedding
One of the first steps in planning your wedding day should be to narrow down your wedding style and to create a vision to envelop the whole day around. This will give you a bit of direction while navigating the planning process and keeping it fun.
The very first thing to do is dream up your ideal day. Curl up on the couch with a coffee on a Sunday morning and talk about your dream wedding together, regardless of money, to get a feel for what you both picture. Is it a big guest list or just close friends and family? Do you see yourself exchanging vows in your family church or under the trees as the sun sets? Are they personal or traditional vows? At a local venue, your backyard, a beach in Mexico? Is it spring, summer, fall, or winter?
Next you can gather inspiration with that vision in your head. Discover what you want (and don’t want) by checking out Pinterest, wedding magazines, friend’s weddings, Instagram, etc. The more specific you get with your vision, the easier it will be for you to choose your details and explain your style to your vendors. Sometimes it’s hard to put a style into words, luckily there are quizzes like this one from The Knot. I took this one and it came up with the perfect way to describe our day “modern with a bit of hippie, a touch of country, in a backyard/trees/or ranch”. They pretty much nailed it, just wait until you see our photos next year :)
You can narrow in on your style by choosing styles such as modern, classic, boho, romantic, rustic, glam, or simple and then digging deeper and making it as unique as possible. For example, a couple who loves to hike and spend time outdoors may choose an outdoor venue among the trees, wear comfortable shoes to hike to the ceremony spot, and include lots of greenery in their decor. A couple who likes to read may choose an industrial or library type venue and have old books as their centrepieces. Make your day as special and unique to you as possible, it will mean that much more.
When it comes to choosing colours for your wedding, why stick to one? So many brides think that they have to choose one and incorporate it in the bridesmaid’s dresses, the groomsmen’s ties, the centrepieces, the flowers, etc. In my opinion, choose a palette! It will add a bit of variety and look a little less put together (in the best way)! Instead of choosing pink, go with a palette of pale pinks, nudes, and soft greys. Another favourite trend of mine is mismatched dresses for the bridesmaids. The girls will most definitely be happier in a dress they’re comfortable in instead of a one-dress-fits-all gown, so why not have them choose their own dress within the palette you chose.
Another element to the vibe of your day is the food. Food was one of our top three wedding items that were most important to us. We want our guests to enjoy themselves and good food can play a big role in that. Far too often the food is mediocre on a wedding day, but I know when I’m entertaining my friends and family at home I want to make sure it’s delicious and there’s lots of it. Whether you choose a formal served sit down dinner, family style with tons of plates right in the middle of the table, or a casual barbeque, the food will set the tone for how comfortable your guests are. Can they eat with their hands, go up for seconds, and drink their beer right out of the bottle? Or are their servers pouring their wine and just one of two fancy dishes to choose from? Decide how you’d like your meal and do it that way.
And finally, the vendors you choose will ultimately help set the tone for your big day. The venue obviously plays a big part, but hiring a decorator, florist, bartender, photographer, and officiant who mesh well with you and understand your vision for the day will make it all come together and leave you feeling able to hand off the control and really be present. We have completely chosen our vendors with this in mind (and I’m a girl who likes to be in control), but I feel so confident and whole-heartedly trust those people we’ve included in our wedding day to make it the absolute day we dream of.
